Southford Falls State Park

Southford Falls State Park is located in the town of Southbury in south eastern CT. The first thing worth noting is the bathroom situation, as it says it provides restrooms, but they are currently closed. I am not sure whether this is due to the season or Covid. If you are a lazy hiker and want the payoff right out of the parking lot, you will be happy, as the waterfall is located before the hikes even begin. I don’t think I am a very good judge of waterfalls because I love them all. Ten out of ten.

Other than the falls, there is a covered bridge, which seem to be pretty popular in the area. That is not to far into the hike. The bridge crosses a stream about 12-15 feet across that stays besides you for a bit until you get to their little section of board walk that gives the hike a little more interest for my kids. After this, the hike becomes a little more challenging than your basic walk. There are both obstacles: falling trees, rocks, wet areas you need to navigate over and elevation, which I guess is in itself another obstacle. The elevation gets quite steep at points, but there is plenty of room to rest, but don’t sit on the logs as you do, as they do say there are ticks.

Now the interesting thing here was the tower. The tower seems less like a tower I would imagine and more of a two story staircase that would most resemble something you would climb to take your turn on a water slide. Don’t get me wrong, it was awesome, but as I do get a little nervous with heights, I was more comfortable taking pictures at the tower we visited the week before. But situated at one of the highest points before you travel up the 2 flights, the view was still great to take in.

There is also a nice sized lake where people can fish. It was frozen and we tested its strength in the shallow end. Luckily for our feet it was frozen solid. If you follow the edge of the lake to the other side of the trail, you will find a very interesting tree. This tree actually comes out of the ground, circles around and shoots right back up way into the sky. It was a very cool sight. If you make a trip, let me know what you liked or didn’t. Happy hiking.

Parking was free.

If there is anything you would like to know that I left out, feel free to leave a comment.

Poor tree didn’t know which way was up.
Only one foot got wet. It wasn’t me or kid.

We only made the west side of the red trail up to where the tower is. Some of the trail was closed off.
